The Glengarry cap is one of the most recognisable pieces of Scottish military and civilian dress. Originating in the Highlands of Scotland in the early 19th century, it was worn by Scottish regiments throughout the British Army and quickly became adopted as everyday Highland dress. Today, it sits at the top of any well-dressed man’s kilt outfit, literally and figuratively.
At Great Kilt, our Glengarry hat range brings this proud tradition to your wardrobe with authentic styling, quality materials and a fit designed for real-world wearing. Whether you are stepping out at a Highland wedding, representing your clan at the games, or completing a formal kilt outfit, our Glengarry caps deliver the finishing touch that elevates the entire ensemble.
A Glengarry is a folding cap made of thick-milled wool, boat-shaped in profile with a flat top and typically featuring a pair of ribbon tails hanging at the back. Many styles feature a diced band of alternating coloured squares, traditionally red, white and black, around the crown. A clan or regimental badge is often pinned to the left side, and a hackle may be worn for ceremonial occasions.
The Glengarry is worn slightly tilted to the right, with the diced band visible over the forehead. It carries centuries of Highland heritage and commands respect when worn with intention.
