There is a moment, just before you leave the house dressed in your kilt, when everything comes together. The tartan falls right, the sporran sits exactly where it should, and then you spot it in the mirror the kilt pin. Small, precise, deliberately chosen. That single accessory tells a story.
At Great Kilt, we stock a hand-picked range of kilt pins that honour the traditions of the Scottish Highlands while giving you the freedom to express your own identity. Whether you are heading to a wedding, a Highland games event, a graduation, or simply wearing your kilt with pride, the right pin brings the whole look to life.
A kilt pin is a decorative brooch-style fastener worn on the outer apron of a traditional kilt, positioned roughly two inches from the lower right-hand corner. Its original purpose was entirely practical, to add weight and keep the apron from blowing open in the Scottish wind. Today it serves a dual purpose: functional anchor and statement piece.
Unlike sporrans or belts, the kilt pin is the accessory where you have the most creative freedom. Clan crests, national emblems, Celtic knotwork and animal motifs are all fair game, and the choice you make reveals something about who you are and where you come from.
Every pin in our collection has been selected for quality of craftsmanship and authentic design detail:
Position your kilt pin on the lower right section of the outer apron only. Never pin through both layers of fabric, as this defeats the purpose and restricts the natural movement of the kilt. The pin should sit approximately two inches from the bottom and two inches from the right edge of the apron. For a formal black tie event, choose silver or antique silver. For daywear or casual Highland events, gold-tone and bronze pins work beautifully.
